Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital offers a comprehensive range of elective and emergency services. Our work includes managing routine ENT conditions either in a clinic setting or with surgery if required. In addition we provide a range of specialist services that take advantage of the expertise and facilities within the hospital that allow us to offer a full range of treatment options to the children and young people of Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond.

We have six ENT surgeons in the department, all of whom have undertaken additional training at leading international and UK children’s hospitals to allow us to provide the highest standard of care for our patients and their families. We offer clinic and theatre sessions every day Monday to Friday. Emergency care is provided 24/7 year round via the Emergency Department.

The department has a dedicated tracheostomy nurse specialist who provides advice and support to children with trachesotomy tubes and their families

Conditions we treat

We run consultant-led outpatient clinics for general ENT conditions, as well as specific clinics for voice/airway disorders or patients with hearing and/or balance concerns. We treat a range of children’s ENT disorders, including:

  • Snoring and sleep apnoea
  • Recurrent tonsilltis
  • Tongue tie
  • Glue ear
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Prominent ears
  • Hearing problems
  • Blocked nose
  • Neck lumps

We offer diagnostic procedures in clinic or theatre to identify airway problems and have expertise and experience in treating children who need advanced airway interventions such as airway reconstruction. We have two dedicated ear surgeons who provide surgical options for chronically infected ears. In association with our nationally accredited Hearing Services department, we offer a breadth of hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids and range of hearing implants. Patients with complex hearing needs are managed in a multidisciplinary fashion to ensure the best options are identified and offered to our patients.

Facilities / ward information

ENT outpatient services are based within the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust Outpatient Department on the Western Bank hospital site.

The Outpatient Department is located within the Hearing Services department on C floor, Green Lifts/Stairs.

ENT admissions are accommodated on the Theatre Admissions Unit ( TAU) , Ward 1 and Paediatric Critical Care Unit ( PCCU) as required.

For some surgical procedures we are pioneering a more efficient pathway for parents and parents where your child can be discharged directly from our Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) shortly after surgery, minimising length of stay in hospital.

Supporting Future Surgeons

The department supports a specialist registrar on the South Yorkshire training rotation. These surgeons gain the experience they need to offer the highest standards of care whilst under close supervision of our consultant team. We also offer further training fellowships to surgeons from both the UK and abroad to allow them to deliver the highest quality children’s ENT treatments in their local departments.
