Our Resuscitation Service is based in the Education and Skills Centre in the Stephenson Wing on the Sheffield Children’s hospital site.
The service’s main responsibility is to ensure that staff are trained to resuscitate the children in our care. In addition the service provides and maintains the necessary equipment to do so.
Resuscitation training is largely delivered in the purpose-built Education and Skills Centre which opened in 2010.
This includes annual updates for all clinical staff as well as national courses such as PLS (Paediatric Life Support) and EPALS (European Paediatric Advanced Life Support). The APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support) course is co-ordinated by Sheffield Children’s staff but held off site.
The hospital has a range of advanced patient simulators that are regularly used to simulate emergency events so that staff can practice both technical and non-technical skills in a safe environment.
This is done on emergency/resuscitation courses such as PLS, MEPA (Medical Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia) and CAT (Children’s Advanced Trauma) as well as on staff development courses.
Additionally we work in conjunction with colleagues at Montague Simulation Centre to deliver joint courses for regional and Trust staff.
Simulation is also used in ‘in situ’ mock resuscitation events across the Trust to equip staff to deal with rare emergency events in their own areas using their own teams and equipment.
The Trust has standard resuscitation trolleys in all inpatient and most outpatient areas. In low risk areas there are standard resuscitation grab-bags.
Critical areas such as the Critical Care Unit, Emergency Department and theatres have additional resuscitation equipment and Zoll R-Series defibrillators.
In addition there is a hospital trolley and defibrillator that is brought to all resuscitation team calls in non-critical care areas.
