Links Beyond the Disability Team

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is working in partnership with the British Academy of Childhood Disability (BACD) to offer the Links Beyond the Disability Team course.

Audience:Doctors, specialist nurses, education staff and any other health professionals supporting children and young people and their families.

Cost: £450 (£400 for BACD members)

Course content

This course has been developed by paediatric disability experts at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

After completing the course you will be able to:

  • Within the context of childhood disability, manage aspects of safeguarding, alternative parenting and transition to adult life, and liaise appropriately with other services:
    • Understand safeguarding needs relating to childhood disability and be able to contribute to the prevention, identification and management of the abuse of disabled children and young people.
    • Understand the needs of disabled children and young people in the care of social services and be able to contribute to the welfare of disabled children and young people who are looked-after.
    • Understand the needs of adopted disabled children and young people and be able to contribute to the adoption assessment process and follow up.
    • Understand the challenges and opportunities facing disabled young people as they become adults and be able to contribute to the preparation of disabled young people for adult life.
    • Understand the needs of young people and their families at transition to adult services.
  • Advocate for and with disabled children and young people; communicate with children and young people with a spectrum of communication methods. i. Understand and practice advocacy for disabled children and young people.
    • Understand the importance of communication with disabled children and young people to seek out their ideas, wishes, feelings and promote their self-advocacy.
  • Critically evaluate local health services.

Application information

You can apply and start the course any time throughout the year.

The course is self-paced. As a guide, a minimum of four hours study time per week should help you to complete the course in approximately four months. We are flexible with the timeframe as there is no deadline for completion.

Cost: £450 (£400 for BACD members)

Registrations are accepted all year round.
